‘The Digitalisation of Landscape Narratives: Artificial Intelligence, Representation and Ethics’ at Yeditepe University

Earlier this week, I had the pleasure of being a guest speaker at the Yeditepe University Faculty of Architecture, Department of Urban Design and Landscape Architecture. In our seminar titled "Digitalizing Landscape Narrative: AI, Representation, and Ethics," we had the opportunity to deeply explore the digital transformation shaping the present and future of our profession.

A New Era in Landscape Architecture: Artificial Intelligence

During the seminar, we discussed how AI has moved beyond being a mere "visualization tool" to actively influencing design processes and transforming the modes of landscape representation. We engaged in a productive exchange of ideas on how the speed and aesthetic possibilities offered by digital tools can be harmonized with the designer’s unique narrative.

The Power of Representation and Ethical Boundaries

One of the most crucial points of the presentation was the concept of ethics. The connection between generated images and reality, the inherent bias in datasets, and the role of the designer’s intellectual labor in this new order created a rich discussion environment enhanced by the participants' contributions. Together, we addressed the vital question of how to preserve the ecological and ethical values of landscape architecture in the face of rapid technological advancement.

A Promising Dialogue for the Future

Being among a community that so critically questions the role of digitalization in urban design and landscape architecture education was truly inspiring for future projects.
